Installing a new floppy disk drive

The floppy disk drive allows you to save and transport data from your computer.  Almost all computers today come with a 3.5 inch disk drive ( that is the only type you see unless you have been using computersfor a loooong time (like 10 years) and still remenber the real floppy disks, the 5.25 inch disks).  Installing a new floppy drive is very easy.  There is no need to install software or drivers or anything else.  It's truly plug and play.

   To install a floppy drive:

  1. First turn off your computer and unplug it.
  2. Remove the case.
  3. Note where the old drive is and see if you need to remove any other components to get to it.
  4. Disconnect the cable attaching the drive to the mother board. This will be a flat grey cable.
  5. Disconnect the floppy drive from the power supply.  This is done by removing a couple of small read, yellow, and black wires that all connect to one white plastic tip.  Gently, yet firmly pull the plug out.
  6. Now unscrew the old drive and remove it from the case.
  7. Insert the new drive where the old one went and screw it in.
  8. Plug the power supply back into it and then plug the grey cable comming off the motherboard into it.
  9. Now screw the case back on.
  10. Plug your computer back in and your done!
